FemaleVSMaleBrains    IS YOUR PARTNER DRIVING YOU CRAZY?

Stuck in a stressful partnership? Trapped in a relationship with constant bickering and never-ending arguments? Couples Coaching may be able to help.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUPLES COACHING, COUPLES THERAPY, OR COUPLES COUNSELING?

Couples Counseling and Couples Therapy are essentially one and the same: a style of psychotherapy that works with couples of all sizes, shapes and flavors to identify relationship obstacles, address and resolve conflict, deepen sexual connection and work together to forge a more meaningful mutually satisfying relationship.

Typically couples counseling or therapy involves working together with a psychotherapist/counselor on a number of relationship challenges including: communication roadblocks, sexual intimacy, financial troubles, anger and resentment, chronic bickering, substance abuse, infidelity, child-rearing conflicts, as well as your garden variety couples and cohabitation troubles.  As a Couples Coach and psychoherapist, I generally engage all of the above techniques and tools, but take a more direct coaching approach requiring a more hands on, action-oriented style.

 DOES COUPLES COACHING  WORK?

Not an easy question to answer. Successful coaching depends on a number of different factors including: The level of commitment to attending sessions, a genuine willingness to change, and the depth of your relationship issues.  Whatever the case, couples work can be a more layered and complex process  because of a number of challenges already baked into the process. Couples often wait a long time before they reach out for help, one partner may drag the other partner in kicking and screaming and often the couple can be at a disadvantage from the beginning if both partners are secretly there because they feel the “other” is the one who needs the help!

WHAT ARE THE ODDS MY RELATIONSHIP WILL SURVIVE?

Another difficult question to answer due to an assortment of factors involved. That said, here are some counseling theories and therapy statistics to mull over.

According to the research reported by The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, 97% of the families and couples who participated in the study reported high levels of satisfaction, and claimed they got the help they needed. In addition, many participants aknowledged that couples therapy also improved their physical health and their functioning at work.

Statistics suggest that couples therapy is generally more effective and actually works faster than individual therapy. In couples work, not only are both partners working on their interpersonal dynamic, or how they relate to one another as a team, but they both are also working on themselves individually. With the additional personal growth on both sides of the table, both partners will spend less money together and feel better sooner than if each individual tried to get some help on their own.

So, yeah…there are never any guarantees that couples therapy will work for you, but there is plenty of hard scientific evidence that suggests the odds just might be in your favor if at least one of the partners is genuinely willing to make a commitment to the work!
